MY ROLE:
Industrial Designer
The Challenge
Choose an EXISTING brand and Create a product they would never make
The brand I decided to choose was Dyson. I’ve always been fascinated by the design of all Dyson products. Starting from their vacuums all the way to their blade-less fans.
My Approach
The first thing I knew I needed to do was to research about the company itself and their vision for the future.
Sir James Dyson is a British inventor, industrial designer and founder of Dyson. He is best known as the inventor of the Dual Cyclone bag-less vacuum cleaner. His contribution to the design world has profoundly changed the way designers approach problems.
Dyson’s mission is to inspire future engineers, support medical research, and offer donations and educational support to local schools and charities in Chicago. He believes that engineers are the world’s problem solvers and that our world needs many more of them.
about the dyson Brand
invention and improvement
In 1978, James Dyson was disappointed in his Hoover Junior vacuum cleaner. He knew he was onto something but just needed a push. Taking inspiration from a local sawmill using cyclone technology to separate sawdust particles from the air, he was able to create a prototype that worked. It took him 5 years and 5,127 prototypes until the world’s first bag-less vacuum cleaner was created.
The product Dyson will never Make!
A SOUND SYSTEM
Here’s why:
The Dyson brand primarily focuses on its users and improving their daily lives. The industry that affects the most amount of people is in consumer goods. A quick glance into Dyson’s catalog shows their focus towards household appliances such as vacuum cleaners, hair care products, fans, air purifiers, and ceiling lights.
On the contrary, there are many similarities between Dyson’s brand philosophy and the audio entertainment industry; such as power, ingenuity, and presence.
Product Research
Below are images of Dyson’s current products:
With the many styles of sound systems, sound bars were the most appropriate that matched the Dyson brand. Many sound bars lack form development, part breaks, color, and branding. This gave me an opportunity to apply Dyson’s brand to my final product.
Below are images of current sound bar systems:
Word Cloud
After analyzing Dyson’s products, I generated a list of words to best describe the brand.
Mood Board
These mood boards were created to evoke emotions that are commonly found in Dyson products. These mood boards were used thoughout the concept and ideation phases.
Concepts and Ideations
initials thoughts
My methodology to creative problem solving begins with sketching any and all ideas that come to mind.
Refined Concepts
Going back and forth with thumbnails and mood boards, I was able to take some of the initial thumbnails and combine common themes to create more refined concepts.
Final Direction
The most common characteristics found in the Dyson included large part breaks, rounded surfaces, and combinations of simple surfaces.
